Photography, artist book
The individuals portrayed in Here were all standing at significant crossroads in their lives.
Each of them was facing profound personal change: some embraced the future with confidence, while others approached it with uncertainty and apprehension. Yet all shared a common reality: they were attempting, in their own way, to shape a future within an increasingly complex and divided world.

Through photography and conversation, Dirk Bouwen sought to explore these transitional moments. Every portrait session began with an open dialogue, offering a temporary glimpse into the unique personal universe of each participant. Their hopes, fears and expectations revealed not only individual stories, but also broader reflections on belonging, responsibility and the changing nature of contemporary society.
To witness these intimate narratives was both a privilege and an invitation to reflect on our shared human condition. The project became an exploration of what it means to inhabit the present while negotiating an uncertain future.
The outbreak of the pandemic abruptly interrupted the continuation of the series. Rather than abandoning the work, Bouwen transformed the material into a documentary-oriented artist's book, bringing together a selection of the interviews and portraits created before the lockdowns, serving both as a record of a particular moment in history and as a testament to the resilience and vulnerability of those navigating life's turning points.
